Softball Team Promises Top Tier Accolades

Posted by Aaron Bennett On March - 26 - 2010 Comments Off

This year’s softball team is looking for redemption. After finishing in fourth place last season, our girls are looking to step it up a notch. And based on the players that they have right now, they should not have any problem doing that. This team is coached by one of the most astute men in the league, Randy Hopkins, who also happens to be the Athletic Director at the school. Coach Hopkins has high hopes for this team. “I think we’ll do very well. I think we will be in the top three in our league. We’ve got some high goals that we’ve set.”

Last year, our softball team hoped for more than what they got. As do most teams. This year, they are entering the season with a force. Though the team lost the first two games, both by a small margin, the team has already realized what it needs to work on the most. Starter and the only senior on the team, Candice Balswick gives an example. “The team batting is what needs to be worked on the most.” Catcher Angelina Martin agrees “As a team, we need to work on having quality at-bats every game and playing our best.” It shows the strength of a team when the players are aware of what it is that they need to work on. This awareness allowed them to win their third game against Le Grand.

However, awareness of flaws is not the team’s only strong point. This team has a whole lot more going for them. “Our infield is very strong as is the top of our batting line-up.” Candice Balswick has confidence in this team, and for a very good reason. Not only is the infield strong, the outfield is led by Cheyenne Perry, in her third year of varsity softball. The infield has some real standouts with Stephanie Huber and Tara LaFollette both as excellent pitchers. Angelina Martin plays as catcher and Candice Balswick plays at shortstop. Some other great players on the team are Kara Gabrielson at third base, Molly Farrar second base, and Kaisa Spycher at first base Most of the team agrees that Waterford will be the hardest team they play, but Stephanie Huber expects to do better, saying “playoffs for sure!”

Swim Team On the Fast Track

Posted by Anthony Adams On March - 26 - 2010 Comments Off

The T.C. vs. East Union High swim meet last Friday, held at Sierra High kicked off this year’s season. The swim team consists of 10 members, and includes one returning senior and a mix of juniors, sophomores and freshmen, both returning and new alike. Paul Mauer is the coach and the practices are held at Pitman High School.

Colin Russell, a returning swimmer, states that the practices are, “Really Hard,” but says he likes the swim meets because of the challenge he gets and the fact that he, “Gets to go fast.” Colin has posted times of 22.84 seconds on the 50 freestyle and 50.07 seconds on the 100 free.

Team mate Johanna Muller enjoys the camaraderie as well as the competition. “While swimming is a team sport it is also an individual one,” she said.

Upcoming meets will include Pitman, Merced, Hilmar and Los Banos, so get out there and support our Swim Team.

Eagles Baseball Improves Under New Coaching

Posted by Angie Martin On March - 26 - 2010 Comments Off

“Out hustle, out work, and out play our opponents.” This is Turlock Christian baseball coach Jon Valenti’s goal is for the season, and with the Eagle’s strong lineup, it should not be a problem. It is Valenti’s first year coaching varsity at Turlock Christian, and he is expecting the team to be “unstoppable.” Clearly, what he’s done with the team so far is working.

The Eagle’s beat Modesto Christian in a close game of 3-2, and blew Le Grand out of the water 11-1. They also had several outstanding wins in preseason play. First Baseman and pitcher, Trevor Starn, believes the momentum will continue in spite of a Goliath in their future.

“The team is going to do well in league this year I think. We’ve improved a lot from last year and the league is weaker than last year. Mariposa will be our biggest challenge.”

Coach Valenti agreed that Mariposa, whose team runs like a well-oiled machine, will be a tough team to beat, but he believes there’s a greater opponent to own.  “I think our toughest opponent is ourselves. My only concern is we cannot make mental errors that will cost us the game, because talent-wise we have it.”

The key strength of the Eagles this year is their potent lineup. With vital players such as Trevor Starn, Robbie Smallwood, Mile Martinez, and Jesse Lopes, Valenti is anticipating the team to go very far, and a contributing factor to that success is their hitting.

“I think the strongest aspect of this team would be our offense,” says Valenti. “We really possess a lot of strength in our line-up. Although we have not nearly reached our potential in hitting, it will come. When it does come, we will be unstoppable,” he added.

Although the team is stacked with talent this year, two specific players who will excel come to mind for Starn. “Jesse Lopes is a standout . . . stud at defense. Robbie, if he gets hot, is one of if not the best hitter in the league.”

In recent years, it has appeared as if the team had trouble putting their potential through to the games. This year, the team has a variety of talent from both the upperclassmen and the lower classmen, and has the drive necessary to win games. , “Last year, we had a lot of potential but didn’t have any of it carry over into wins. We want to, and expect to beat teams this year,” said Starn.

As for Valenti, he knows what his team is capable of, and expects exceptional effort from everyone on the team, from the bench players to the starters. After losing a starting pitcher last year, a weakness the team is trying to overcome is finding someone to fill that spot. Another thing the team is working on is having equal ability throughout the whole team, and Coach Valenti looks forward to seeing development. “We will also have to work on having our bench players be just as good as our starters. So far, our bench players are making great strides in improving.”

This could be a year of glory for Turlock Christian baseball, if they play their cards right. The talent is there; they simply need to keep their eye on the prize. From their powerful lineup to their win-it-all attitude, there is something special within the Eagles this season. Valenti knows it, too. “God has blessed me with the opportunity and given me the great honor to coach these fine young men. I hope just to give them as much knowledge that I know to help inspire them to be better athletes, and better baseball players. Even after 20+ years of playing, teaching, & coaching the game, I still am learning myself.”

Track Team Starts off with a Bang

Posted by Aaron Bennett On March - 26 - 2010 Comments Off

For the first time in recent school history, if you walk past to the lunch tables on the way to the field you’ll find something much better than trash and discarded food, you will find Turlock Christian’s first-ever throwing team, for Turlock Christian’s first-ever track team. Even though this is its first year, Coach Aaron King is planning on a successful season. “Our boys are going to have a strong showing. I think we’ll do well in Southern League. However, I strongly believe that our girls can win league championship.”

It has been a long process to get a track team started at TC, taking more than a few years. Students have tried to get one going, but they were never able to acquire a practice field or a coach. That all changed this year as Dirk Ulrich and Aaron King stepped in as coaches to the team, and Pitman High School allowed us to practice over at their track. TC has already become a very dominant force in our league, with the girl’s team ranked number one out of six.

Standout freshman Emily Retemeyer has high hopes for the Eagles. “I think the track team has done exceptional already and we could only get better from here. It’s going to be a good season.”

Emily could not be more correct. Jordan Gustafson, discuss and shot put, has already improved far beyond what even he expected. He is throwing the discuss a good twenty feet further than he was throwing it at the beginning of the season. Martin Moreda, a sophomore runner, is also experiencing great success. Even at a track meet against Division One schools like Pitman, Martin placed first in his event, a true foreshadow of how our school should do throughout the rest of the season.

Martin Moreda has been voted most likely to excel by his teammates, in addition to Paige and Allie Ulrich along with Daniel Schultz, three standout runners that promise to deliver big money throughout the season.

Thrower Jordan Gustafson anticipates a great season. “I feel the track team is a fun, but tough challenge. And it is great for people who would like to compete in their own events and reach a personal best.”

Golf

The Turlock Christian golf team “does not get enough credit” says returning junior player Chase Ulrich, “Our team has been the most successful team that Turlock Christian has and we deserve more credit then what we are given. Meanwhile our team is very fun and I love being on it.”

The expectations are always high for the Eagles, who are chasing their seventh consecutive Sac-Joaquin Section championship under Jeff Cederlind’s guidance. The coach expects his team to once again be a contender for the section title; though he also knows Mariposa and Jim Elliot Christian could prove to be serious challengers. Cederlind welcomes back a number of returnees from last season, including Beau Warda, a CIF NorCals qualifier. But the senior has a bad knee, an injury he suffered during the Turlock Christian football season. Cederlind doesn’t think Warda’s knee will fully heal anytime soon but believes he’ll be competitor.

2009 record: 9-0 Southern League, this was last year’s record, but what’s expected this year? The TC golf team is as strong as ever and is ready to soar over the rest of the competition and take the Southern League title once again in 2010.

Coach Jeff Cederlind has high expectation for his team this year, “This year I expect to see great improvements the team. I know my team will work hard and finish strong this year with an even better average score. We are looking forward to another Southern League title, and to compete in the section finals.”

Girls Soccer Takes on a Big Challenge

Posted by Tevin Jones On March - 25 - 2010 Comments Off

It’s about passing on the torch for this year’s TC Girls Soccer team. With so many newcomers senior players like Megan Brown, Morgan Andre, Danae Smith, and Amy Wright are stepping up to make sure TC soccer talent stays in the family.

“I think the team will have a pretty good year, we have a lot of young new girls but they have a good work ethic and are learning quick,” says Megan Brown, a senior and captain of the team.

Coach Shirley Brand agrees that the freshman will be able to learn very quickly.

“The freshmen are incredible sponges and they listen to everything you say, and are such a blessing, and great things come with time, so I believe they will come out strong throughout the season” says Coach Brand.

The TC Eagles girl soccer team has had a slow start to the season, losing their first league game to Delhi 3 to 0.  But in the next couple of games they will step up their game.

Even Megan thinks the team will grow, not only in skill but also in unity. “I definitely think the team will continue to grow on skills and unity as the season progresses. Even with the few games we have played, we have adjustments and learned from them, which made our skills grow immensely. I am excited to see how we progress as the season progresses. As for unity goes, the soccer team always feels like a family, we become so close as a group. I love every moment on and off the field and will never forget the memories that we’ve made over the years.”

The TC Eagles soccer team’s second game was against le grand, and they have already made major improvements, although they lost 1 to 0, they played a great game.  The team’s next game was against Waterford, they have already grown into a great team. They defeated Waterford 3 to 2.  The team will have some hard games coming up next game, where they will be playing Mariposa at home.

Who Dat?! Saints Triumph Over Colts

Posted by Jina Daniel On February - 24 - 2010 Comments Off

As the clocked ticked, fourth-down approached and Manning knew it was over.

The Super Bowl is not just a game; it is a part of America’s history.

The first Super Bowl was on January 15, 1967 where the Green Bay Packers defeated the Arizona Cardinals 35-10 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Since then 44 Super Bowls have been played and many records have been set. Chuck Noll, the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, is the head coach with the most Super Bowl victories with four (IX, X, XIII, and XIV). Bill Walsh of the 49ers, Joe Gibbs of the Redskins, and Bill Belicheck of the Patriots have each won three Super Bowls as head coaches.

Joe Montana of the 49ers and Terry Bradshaw of the Steelers are the starting quarterbacks with the most Super Bowl victories at 4. Montana won Super Bowls XVI, XIX, XXIII, and XXIV and Bradshaw won Super Bowls IX, X, XIII, and XIV. Montana, Troy Aikman, and Tom Brady have 3 each.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are the NFL franchise with the most Super Bowl wins with six. SB IX: 16-6 Pittsburgh over Minnesota, SB X: 21-17 Pittsburgh over Dallas, SB XIII: 35-31 Pittsburgh over Dallas SB XIV: 31-19 Pittsburgh over LA Rams, SB XL: 21-10 Pittsburgh over Seattle, SB XLIII: 27-23 Pittsburgh over Arizona. The Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers each have five Super Bowl wins. Dallas won VI, XII, XXVII, XXVIII, and XXX. The 49ers won Super Bowls; XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV, and XXIX.

Super Bowl 2010

This year the New Orleans Saints faced the Indianapolis Colts in South Florida. After a slow first quarter, it looked like the Colts were ready to run away with the win, the Saints changed the path of Super Bowl XLIV by taking control of the second quarter. The Saints ran 26 offensive plays while the Colts ran six. The Saints opened the second half shocking the Colts with an onside kick. Six plays later, Pierre Thomas scored on a 16-yard catch-and-run to hand the Saints their first lead, 13-10.

The game was over when Saints Cornerback Tracy Porter stepped in front of Reggie Wayne, and intercepted Peyton Manning’s pass, returning it for 74 yards for a touchdown which gave the Saints a 31-17 lead with 3:12 remaining in the game. Porter stepped up and secured the win for the Saints; after all defense wins championships. The Colts were unable to get in the end zone in the final minutes, giving the Saints their first Super Bowl championship!

The game was filled with amazing plays; and both teams set records this year. The Saints lost their final three regular-season games and became the first team to bring a three-game losing streak into the playoffs and win the Super Bowl. With the loss by the Colts and Manning, the last five regular-season MVPs to reach the Super Bowl have lost the game. The Saints’ kicker Garrett Hartley became the first kicker in Super Bowl history with three field goals made from 40 yards or more. Colts’ kicker Matt Stover became the oldest player in a Super Bowl at 42 years old. Indianapolis’ 96-yard touchdown drive in the first quarter tied the 1985 Bears for the longest drive in Super Bowl history.

At the end of the day the Saints got the job done and won their first championship at their first ever Superbowl appearance. Running back, Reggie Bush summed up the day stating, “I think it (the championship) is more special because in the fashion that we did it and the city that we did it for. A city that was pretty much destroyed in a hurricane and they need something to be proud of. Through the 30 or 40 years plus of terrible seasons in New Orleans, now they can excel; now they can be proud of the Saints.”

Homecoming Victory Pumps Up School

Posted by Aaron Bennett On February - 24 - 2010 Comments Off

The crowd rushes into the CSUS arena, home of the Warriors, eager to find the best seats. It’s not a playoff game or even a game against TC’s biggest rival; it is, however, the game that everyone will attend…Homecoming 2010! As the students found their way to the infamous Eagle’s Nest, the excitement and anticipation built until the team was finally introduced on the floor. And as cliché as it sounds, the crowd went wild.

Also announced on homecoming night was the homecoming court.

  • Freshman princess: Arin Morelli
  • Sophomore princess: Mary Sargisian
  • Junior princess: Molly Farrar
  • Queen runner-ups: Johanna Muller and Amy Wright
  • Queen: Kiley Keas

This game was more than a game. It was a great way to end homecoming week and start homecoming weekend. Spirit Week, the five days leading up to the game featured dress up days like Olympic Day and Pajama Day, and activities such as the second annual Human-Powered Vehicle Rally. The Tuesday before the game, the boy’s basketball team played an amazing game against Denair, our cross-town rival, spurred forward by rowdy fans. That win seemed to bolster the team’s confidence.

“We should be in control of the game and win big,” said Casey Snyder before the homecoming game. And the momentum continued during the Homecoming game against the Waterford Wildcats, staying in control for the last three quarters, winning 60 to 48 in front of a full home side. Both sides played hard, but the Eagles fought hard enough to win the most-watched game of the year. Josh Wright and Brandon Rogers led the team in scoring, with 17 points apiece.

“That was an exciting game. The team played a great first half and put it away in the second.” said Coach Snyder. “It was a great game.”

After winning the game, a few players commented on the win. “I was flabbergasted,” said Brandon Rogers. “I felt very good,” added Austin Morelli.

The Homecoming game was also a chance for the Lady Eagle team to redeem themselves after a very disappointing, five-point loss to Le Grand, their first loss in a while. “I am very confident in our team. We continue to play selfless and united, game after game, and as long as we keep that up, we’re unstoppable,” said Molly Zuhlke.

And they really were unstoppable. On Friday night, winning by a margin of almost forty points, with Amy Wright leading the way with 14 points on her own.

When the night was over, TC fans appeared to be filled with a sense of pride, smiling as their team excitedly ran off the court. One fan expressed, “I was full of pride as our school won the game and I was proud of the student body for becoming the sixth man.”

Lady Eagles Look to Playoffs

Posted by Aaron Bennett On December - 9 - 2009 Comments Off

As the clock ran down, the small crowd from T.C. knew that the girl’s basketball season would be over. And although everyone in the stands knew this, the girls on the floor never played like it. They never stopped fighting, ceasing only when the last buzzer went off. It was a disappointing loss for the Lady Eagles, putting them out of the playoffs. But also lost were Erin Santiago, Tiffany Snyder and Emily Breuss. This was a huge blow to the Lady Eagles, but the current team seems to be taking it in stride as new players come up.

Players such as freshman Halie Bergman, who has been compared to Erin Santiago in her prime, Amy Wright, one of the most experienced players to return to the team, and Candice Balswick, one of the most aggressive players in the Southern League are some of the key players.

“Halie Bergman will help us out with her amazing moves and consistent threes,” said Amy Wright.

Also on Amy’s mind are the playoffs. They may be a ways off, and not a definite, but Amy Wright is confident that this year’s squad will have no problem getting there. “I think our toughest opponent this year in league is going to be Le Grande. If we get into the playoffs, which I’m thinking we have a high chance of doing, then Bradshaw Christian is the one to beat.”

Volleyball Serves Up Successful Playoff Season

Posted by Tevin Jones On December - 9 - 2009 Comments Off

This year’s volleyball team had a successful season, which put them in the playoffs. “This year we were planning on going all the way. We were ready to take Davis, but unfortunately we came up short. We had a very good play off season and I am so proud of everyone finishing with a fight,” says Megan Brown senior player for the team.

The Lady Eagles went on and played their first game in Marysville. The team was pumped for this game but it was going to be a little different from their average game. Instead of playing on a hard wood floor they would have to play on carpet.

“We had practice on carpet the day before. After our day of practice we were very ready to play,” said Brown. Even with playing on the carpet they easily defeated their opponents, New Life Christian. After that game they were very excited and pumped for their next game, but weren’t ready for what happened next. Johanna Muller, a key player, sprained her wrist in practice before the big game. In spite of her injury, Muller played in the game to help her team. The team tried their best but in the end they lost 3-2 to Woodland Christian.

“I think everyone was really bummed after our last game,” admitted Brown. “It was probably the hardest loss all season, not just because it ended our season but also because we wanted that game so bad,’ she said. However, the team’s returning players remain optimistic for next season, rebuilding with new players and returning juniors.
Still, Brown can’t help but reflect on such an uplifting year. “This season was definitely so a lot of fun, and I loved every second of It. I think this might have been my favorite group of girls I have ever played with. They really made everything such a joy. I am really going to miss each one of them next year.”

Football Wrap-Up

Posted by Aaron Bennett On December - 9 - 2009 Comments Off

Chase Ulrich summed it up rather nicely when he said, referring to the football team-“I just wish we could have beaten Denair and Mariposa.”

When Refereeing Goes Bad

This past football season, some have argued that the officials may have been biased against our Eagles. So what recourse do teams have when they believe the officiating has been less than fair? Here’s the official procedure as posed on the Norcal Official Website

  1. The coach or athletic director may submit a complaint to the Nor Cal Officials Association.
  2. Once submitted in writing, the board of executives will carefully consider it and any official that it may involve.
  3. If it is found that an official broke the referee code of conduct, he or she may be suspended or expelled from the association.
  4. If expelled, an official may apply for reinstatement two years after the date of his or her expulsion, but must have a petition signed by ten other officials in favor of their return.

*norcalofficials.org

On the night of Friday, November 13, the Turlock Christian Varsity Football Squad was ready to take back what was rightfully theirs, the oh-so-coveted Wagon Wheel, a tradition started two years prior. Everybody on the team was excited for the game, ready to bring back the prize. The whole crowd was ready as well. The game came and went, and along with it went the season, as the outcome of that game, a loss of 39-10, and the bitter sting of defeat decided our playoff berth.

Many believe we could have gotten there if… we threw more, we gave the ball to Nikko more, called different plays, went for it on fourth and inches, lifted weights every day, the list goes on and on. Chase thinks it was more than that.

“We could have done better if we were more of a team, but things were just too separate. We also needed to focus more,” he said.

All of this is hindsight. The season is over and along with the game, we’ve lost many graduating players. To name a few, Nikko Jennings, Robbie Smallwood, Cody Alldrin, Geoffrey Retemyer, Garret Yagi, and Austin Morreli. It will be hard to compensate for these losses, but our school is resilient. We will rebuild.

It was a difficult process to realize the season is over, but the juniors look forward to next year and seniors are happy with the legacy they left. Overall, it was a good season.

Boy’s Basketball on the Upswing

Posted by Aaron Bennett On December - 9 - 2009 Comments Off

Most of the students here know that last year, the Boy’s Basketball team struggled a bit. It’s not to say that they didn’t put up a good effort, but something just didn’t click. This year looks to be a lot different, in a great way.

“This has been a great team to coach. We have some excellent players and are much improved,” says first-year coach Scott Snyder. “This should be an exciting season.”

With only one senior on the team last year, this year’s team should be fresh. Key players to watch this year are, Brandon Rogers, Josh Wright, Kyron Loving, and Casey Snyder. Each has their own way of playing the game blending to create a well-balanced team.

When asked who the toughest opponent was going to be, Casey Snyder replied, “Denair and Mariposa will be tough. Both of those teams have several good seniors, but I feel like we definitely have a shot at beating them if we come out and play hard. In non-league games, our first game against Riverbank will be tough. They are a scrappy team that forces a lot of turnovers.”

To prepare for the upcoming season, the team has done a lot. Coach Snyder said they emphasized on shooting, conditioning, and a winning mindset. “Most of the players who did not play in a fall sport went to the gym to shoot at least twice a week. They also conditioned and lifted weights to build up endurance. In the end it will benefit the team a great deal, as we don’t have the largest team,” said Snyder.

So come on out this year and watch the Boy’s Basketball team push themselves to playoffs. This should be a great year to watch.

Girls Volleyball Meets Challenges Head On

Posted by Tevin Jones On October - 27 - 2009 Comments Off

VolleyballFor most volleyball athletes a bad play is when you miss the ball completely, for Johanna Muller a bad day is when you never see the ball at all. As Captain of the girl’s Varsity volleyball team, Muller is used to pushing through tough moments. A rare condition, which causes her to blackout, hasn’t stopped her from serving up intense competition for the Eagle team.

“Johanna is a great captain, she has all of the girls respect and they all look to her when they need advice or help on and off the court” says Coach Landmeier.

This tenacity is typical of TC’s Volleyball team. Last year the volleyball team made it to playoffs, and this year’s team beat Waterford with a score of 3-0, as well as Delhi with a score of 3-0, and remained undefeated until losing 1-3 to Mariposa. But according to team member, Rebekah Muller, losses only serve to make the team more determined.

“It was a hard blow to everyone, I think, because we all know we could have won. But that just makes us want to beat them next time even more. So we are very much looking forward to that,” says Rebekah.

Something else contributing to the team’s positive attitude says Rebekah Muller, is the cohesive relationship between the girls. “The chemistry between all the girls is great, on and off the court. Having a team (007) and coaches that are like family is such a blessing for everyone.”

So will they make playoffs? Rebekah suggests that answer is dependent on a couple of things. “I think we definitely have the potential to make playoffs, but it all depends on everyone’s drive and determination, and God’s will.”

I’d say that’s the right approach.

TC Eagles Football Fan Frenzy

Posted by Aaron Bennett On October - 27 - 2009 Comments Off

They drive ridiculous distances to get to them. They talk about it all day long. They can’t wait for it. I’m not referring to the latest movie or concert. Nothing unites students like a TC football game. And who can blame them? After the first five games the team boasted a combined score of 135-81.

Austin Morelli, starting center for the Eagles, has high hopes for the team.

“I’m looking forward to a state championship because we have a lot of weapons on offense and defense.”

200910-football2Even though TC lost to Orestimba, the team fought hard and could have won, had it not been for a few mistakes. The following weeks will prove exciting as the team takes on a few more teams before playoffs, the last one against rival, Denair. Coach Rusty Lyons says “I absolutely believe we can beat anyone we face.” Linebacker Garret Yagi has set the bar high saying, “I expect 100% of myself on every play.” The rest of the team is assuredly no different.

One team member playing a key part in this early-season high is Robbie Smallwood. In the first four games, he threw 27 passes for 539 yards and ran for 76 yards, one of the runs a 33-yard touchdown run against Jim Elliot. But as important as he is on the offensive side of the ball, he is just as important on the defense making four tackles in the Elliot game and coming away with a sack against Big Valley.

Team player, Cody Alldrin, arguably one of the most talented wide receivers in our league, has 308 yards on only 14 receptions. He scored all but one of the touchdowns in the Big Valley game, and never fails to make difficult plays. Along with Robbie, Cody also plays a key role on the defense, with 22 tackles and two interceptions.

Nikko Jennings, the main man in rushing, has racked up 126 yards on only 27 carries, averaging 4.7 yards per carry. And although he’s the team’s best rusher, he is also one of the best on defense, with 36 tackles in four games, one of them a sack, the other an interception.

Lastly, one of the most important parts in a football game, the line, is made up of Colin Russell at right tackle, John Kim at right guard, Austin Morelli at center, Garret Yagi and Morgan McIntyre at right guard, and yours truly at left tackle.
Not to be forgotten is Geoffrey Retemeyer with 111 yards receiving and five interceptions, Garret Yagi on defense with 22 tackles and two forced fumbles, Brent Abraham with 17 tackles and a fumble recovery, James Riley with 174 yards and 29 tackles, and Beau Warda with two field goals and six kicks into the end zone.

According to Austin Morelli, before every game, the team talks for about an hour, going over plays and then ending with a prayer. Right before the game, they pad up, and mentally prepare. Garret attributes part of his success to his pump-up. “ Coach King yells like crazy. It’s so intense.”

By the time they take the field, everyone on the team is ready to play, ready to win, but most ready are the fans.

Pass, Kick, Score!

Posted by Heather McCuistian On October - 27 - 2009 Comments Off

200910_soccer2 “Passing, passing, passing,” is the mantra coming from Varsity Soccer Coach Mike Burnam. The new soccer coach’s goal is to win eleven out of twenty four games. Of course they want to go to playoffs, and both Team Captain Kyron Loving and Coach Burnam are optimistic about their chances. But the Turlock Christian Eagle Boy’s Soccer team is doing more than play a game, they are learning about life.

Last month the team decided to forfeit a game due to unfair calls on behalf of the referee, believing it was a matter of principle. After that the Eagles lost two more games, but made a comeback playing Delhi with a 1-0 win. Loving says, “You can’t give up on life just like in the game.”

Another challenge the team had to overcome is getting past the football handicap. “The team has a culture of football,” explained Burnam. “In football the main concept is to go forward, but in soccer you sometimes need to go backwards. That is all part of the game.”

Kyron and Coach Burnam both feel that, overall, the team has improved and has potential. Coach Burnam noticed the freshmen are working hard, and that Nick has improved his over all game. Also exhibiting strength is Erick Amaya, proving to be a strong goalie. Jonathan Boren on defense, and forward, Loving, are also having a good season.

Although Burnam wants to teach them how to play like winners, it’s more about technique. “Passing is the key for playing an excellent game,” he says.
Since having a good attitude also part of a winning game Coach Burnam is asking the boys to reconcile with their teammates if any conflict arises between them. “I want them to handle problems between each other the ‘Bible way’. I don’t want them to come straight to me, but go to the person they have a conflict with, and try to work it out on their own first.”

Sometimes though the scoreboard doesn’t show a teams’ transformation. After a tough battle with Denair under the lights resulting in a score of Denair winning 2-1, Coach Burnam stood proud. “They are improving on trusting each other on the soccer field and even though we didn’t win tonight we played a good game.”

Powder Puff Raises School Spirit

200910_powderpuffSome people might think that power-puff is something you purchase in the cosmetic aisle at Wal-Mart. Boy are they wrong!

This year the senior and freshmen girls battled it out against the junior and sophomore girls in an all out powder puff flag football match held on the TC campus, on October 22, with the freshmen and senior team walking away with a 7-6.victory.

This is a long-standing TC tradition that is put on the night before the homecoming football game to raise school spirit and pump up the student body. The freshmen and senior team this year was coached by Dale Brown, father of Megan Brown, and Mr. Muller, father of Johanna and Rebekah Muller, coached the So-Jo team.

Senior, and captain of the winning team, Candice Balswick, was very excited for their win. “It’s very exciting to win three years, a key aspect to our victory was executing our plays and another was freshmen Halie Bergman,” she said.
Junior Raelynn VanderWeide wasn’t as happy with the outcome of the game, “We should have won tonight, and I think we would have if we could have taken out their offensive line,” she said.

The half time show featured stud-volleyball game, pitting the TC football players against the TC soccer players. Football took the win in a spirited competition.
