  • Each year, Americans throw out enough soda pop cans bottles to reach to the moon and back—twenty times.
  • After Plácido Domingo performed the title role in Verdi’s Otello in Vienna on July 30, 1991, the audience clapped for one hour and 20 minutes (and 101 curtain calls), setting a new world record for the longest applause ever.
  • Prior to the 12th Amendment of the Constitution in 1804, the presidential candidate who received the second highest number of electoral votes was named the vice-president. The amendment mandated that electors vote for the offices of president and vice-president separately.
  • The first country to grant women the right to vote in the modern era was New Zealand in 1893.
  • On average, someone in the U.S. is killed by a drunk driver every 40 minutes.
  • An adult can starve to death within 8-12 weeks. In the final stages of starvation, adults can experience hallucinations, convulsions, severe muscle pain, and irregular heart rhythms. Organs weakened by starvation may actually burst if food is given too quickly.
  • An American is more likely to recycle their trash than to vote.

  • On average, men shell out $130 each on candy, cards, jewelry, flowers and dates. That’s more than double what women commit to spending.
  • More than 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate will be sold for Valentine’s Day
  • 73% of flowers are bought by men, and only 27% are by women
  • 85% of all Valentine cards are bought by women.
  • The Italian city of Verona, where Shakespeare’s lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet every Valentine’s Day.
  • Teachers will receive the most Valentine’s Day cards, followed by children, mothers, wives, and then, sweethearts.
  • Over 1 billion Valentine cards are exchanged in the U.S each year. It’s the largest seasonal card-sending occasion of the year, next to Christmas.
  • About 3% of pet owners will give Valentine’s Day gifts to their pets.
  • Cupid, a symbol of Valentine’s Day, became associated with it because he was the son of Venus, the Roman god of love and beauty.

  • The first time a Christmas tree was lit by electricity was in 1882 in New York. Edward Johnson, a colleague of Thomas Edison, lit a Christmas tree with a string of 80 small electric light bulbs, which he had made himself.
  • Want to be Santa at the mall this year? The average salary is $11 an hour.
  • 20 billion — Number of letters, packages and cards delivered by the U.S. Postal Service between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The busiest mailing day this year is expected to be today (Dec. 19), with more than twice as many cards and letters being cancelled as on an average day.
  • Father Christmas’ reindeers are called Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner/Donder, Blitzen, and Rudolph. Eight of these names are taken from Clement C. Moore’s “A Visit From St. Nicholas,” and the ninth from the song “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” (Donder is also known as Donner.)
